What Is Alimony?
What is alimony?
Alimony, also known as spousal support or maintenance, is a payment from one spouse to the other after the divorce has gone through. Alimony is usually awarded on a temporary basis until the receiving spouse can become self-sufficient. The court may order alimony in a divorce case when one spouse is financially dependent on the other or when the couple was married for a long time and one spouse made significant contributions to his or her education and career. For example, if a stay-at-home mom who gave up her career to raise children goes back to school after getting divorced, she may ask for temporary alimony until she is able to get a job that pays enough in order to not need assistance.
Alimony, also known as spousal support and maintenance, is the money paid by one spouse to the other after a divorce. Alimony is awarded at the discretion of the court and is usually granted when one spouse has sacrificed their career to raise the children or care for the household. Alimony is based on need and not on fault, so even if you were at fault in your marriage and are being held responsible for breaking up your family, you may still be eligible to receive alimony.
