Will is short for the more formal term "last will and testament" and it's essentially a legal declaration of your funeral wishes. It is a document that tells the world who you want to receive your property, possessions and belongings. If you don't have a will, the state in which you live will decide for you who receives your property (and it may not be the people or organizations you would choose). A will doesn't need to be complicated; all you need is a basic understanding of how it works. A will lets people know what they can expect when they inherit something from you.
