Do you need help from a qualified, independent person to protect your interests in court? If you're involved in a legal dispute and are worried that the judge might rule against you because of a conflict of interest or a biased opinion, you may be able to ask the judge for a guardian ad litem (GAL). GALs are usually appointed by judges to represent the best interests of a child or an incapacitated adult who has been affected by the results of a lawsuit. When a GAL is appointed, they'll speak on behalf of their ward, helping them make decisions that they wouldn't otherwise be able to make do to their situation.

When it comes to guardians ad litem recommendations, not all judges are created equal. Some will have clear guidelines for every case, while others might have very little direction besides what's already in place with the court system.
