Are Beneficiaries Entitled To A Copy Of The Will?
Are beneficiaries entitled to a copy of the will?
When someone dies, the family members left behind will often have questions about the deceased's estate. As a close friend or family member, it may be your duty to answer these questions--but before you do, you need to be careful that you don't give away information that you shouldn't. One common question is whether or not a family member has a right to a copy of the will.
This is actually a tricky question, because the answer is sometimes "yes" and sometimes "no." In general, beneficiaries are not entitled to a copy of the will. However, this rule does have some exceptions: if someone specifically requests that their beneficiaries receive a copy of their will, then they are entitled to one. And if there are any questions about what should happen with the estate, beneficiaries may request that they get access to the will in case it sheds any light on how the deceased wanted his or her money and property distributed.
