When do people name someone other than a spouse as an executor of their last will and testament?
When you're choosing someone to be the executor of your will, you want to make sure that person is going to stick around for a while. After all, an executor is responsible for carrying out your wishes after you've passed on, and you want to be sure that your last wishes are followed as closely as possible. But who do you choose?
In most cases, the executor of your last will and testament should be your spouse or domestic partner. After all, he or she has been a part of your life since the day you met and is likely someone who knows at least some of your deepest desires. Other people can fill in if they're needed—say, if your spouse dies before you do—but generally speaking, it's best to name someone who's going to be around for a very long time.
The answer is: when they want someone else to take care of the details when they pass away.
