As anyone who has ever been through a divorce can tell you, the process can be long and complicated. It is not uncommon to miss deadlines and fail to meet certain requirements. The most common reasons for missing a deadline are failing to notice the deadline, or not having enough time or the right information to meet it. This can happen if one party lives far away from the courthouse, or if there are other issues like vacations, illness, or some other emergencies that prevent one party from meeting the requirements in time.

If neither party shows up for court, the judge will issue a judgment by default. This means that if either petitioner or respondent fails to appear for a court hearing, then their spouse will automatically win the case. For example, if husband does not show up for a hearing on his request for alimony (or spousal support), then wife automatically wins and she gets all of husband's income until their divorce decree is finalized. However, in order to obtain this money she must prove that she truly needs it and that she cannot support herself without her ex-husband's assistance.
